MemoriesIt's hard to understand the little things-
a touch, a gentle goodbye, a shout, a mingling of breaths-
When your mind is full of all the big ones-
school, family, life, death-
Full and full and full and full until you burst
A burst of sound and pain and memories of when things were better
And if you were to pick up a fragment of those memories you'd find
or a bike ride
a walk in the park, the time you stubbed your toe on the shelf in the bathroom, something from two nights ago when you opened the fridge and grabbed something to drink
And so, should you have picked up that one tiny fragment, you would find yourself on your knees clutching that memory to your chest and weeping
Until you either drowned in tears or ran dry, until then you'd sit
You'd sit and you'd just be for a while
And then you'd stop
And it would be over.
EasterRemember what you love,
you with sand in your teeth
and the feral burn of hunger
in your eyes.
God sends his regrets.
He made you grasping and slow,
in a late hour
when the wine washed low.
Remember what you love.
Fall to your knees in the toss
and the swell, quell
the appetite of the cold black sea.
Beg blessings for your home
and the salt-sick trees.
Reach what lies near:
the fat-faced child, the sweet-soft lamb;
tether the tantrum, trickle the blood.
Offer psalms to what is holy,
whisper the name of what you love
as it bobs in the bleak mad sea.
